David & the Giants

“God…is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of-infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes.” Ephesians 3:20
David W. Huff, the legendary singer/songwriter of David and the Giant’s fame, continues his musical journey with his second solo project, Proclaim, set to release May 5, 2004 on Christian Records, a Butterfly Group label. Known for prolific lyrics backed by soulful electro grooves, this gifted musician is known as the premier Southern Rock pioneer of Christian music.

Having released seventeen albums with David and the Giants, David W. Huff never dreamed of all the things God had in store for him. Even after the culmination of David and the Giants in 1998, David W. Huff continues to see God’s plan for his life unfold as he fulfills his charge from God.

“God has been so good. He has taken me to a place where nothing means anything to me, but Him.”

Born in Pineville, Mississippi, David spent his life developing as a musician. Through his father’s musical influence and receiving his first guitar at age eleven, aspirations were in place for a career in music. After playing in a few local bands, David banded together with brothers Rayborn and Clayborn in his early twenties to form David and the Giants, and was pursuing his passion through music. God then started subtly moving in his life by allowing different situations to happen so that He could reposition David’s heart, and ultimately speak to him. From the early days of touring, through three car accidents, and a world that was out of control, David realized that all that glitters is not gold.

“There was so much of me that had to be crucified. It took a lot of hurt before I turned my life over to God.” After years of seeking, and some spiritual encouragement from former band mate Keith Thibodeaux, David became a Christian. He gave his life to Jesus and later he shared the message of hope, love, and forgiveness with his brothers.

“Back then I could have never imagined that I would have joy out of singing a song to someone whom I’d never seen before. I had no idea that I could fall in love with somebody who was somewhere out there…but I didn’t know God could really be here. And so, the joy I have today is a relationship with God that is very personal.”

Like so many before him, David struggled with how to serve God through music. A few months later, a local pastor empowered them to be an outreach for the lost. Following that encouragement, David clearly remembers hearing the voice of God call him to share the message of the Gospel through his gift of music. David vividly recalls God saying, “Keep on singing. Keep on singing my song.”

David and the Giants then took their sound, and songs that would reach the souls of the listening world, and embarked upon their ministry, which lasted for two decades. With a collection of songs that echoed the passion of the times, David, along with the presence of his brothers, created some of the classic hits of the era, such as Here’s My Heart and I Can’t Live Without You.

“I’ve never wanted to be something that I’m not, and I’m only who I am by the grace of God. All I am is somebody who really loves God with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength. I visualize myself being someone who’s very bold, but yet meek as a lamb.”

While you may not see David Huff’s boldness until he reaches the stage, you’ll see his humble spirit and love for his God. That passionate relationship with Christ is shown in the songs on Proclaim.

Michael J. Rinaldi, CEO/President of The Butterfly Group, shares, “My Song of Praise, the first single to release to AC/Inspo radio, is my favorite song on the album. It ministers to my heart, leads me to a place of worship, and makes me feel whole.”

When Mercy Found Me is a song from Proclaim that is particularly meaningful to David Huff. When asked about it, he replied, “This song was inspired during a recent trip to Africa. As much as we need the mercy of God in America, it seems like they might need a little more mercy, since there are so many people over there who have never heard the Gospel of Christ.”

Proclaim was produced by Huff, as he says, “Through the inspiration of the Holy Ghost.” The project features a guest appearance on drums by legend Vinnie Colaiuta on songs such as When Mercy Found Me, Holy Rain, and With A Prayer. Huff’s daughter, Kellye and wife Twila are also involved in the background vocals and songwriting of the album. David Huff’s heart and prolific songwriting are shared in the songs on Proclaim.

Proclaim is simply another way for David W. Huff to share the Gospel with a world in need. As David says, “I don’t want to just leave behind a song, but I want to leave behind a legacy of someone that walked and talked with God.”

Regarding this long-awaited project of his dreams, David says this album is, “pleasing to the ears with words that speak to the heart… if you’re praying or worshipping the Lord, this release will go with you to the prayer room.” He couldn’t have said it better. More gentle than his recordings of the past, “Really” doesn’t settle on just one particular genre of music. As if rediscovering a gentler side of himself, David has created a masterpiece mixture of styles. Listeners will be moved as classic strings flow and tender ballads play; however, be prepared to move a bit when the drums and bass kick out a tune that promises a “love that’s always there.” If you listen closely, you’ll also hear a hint of David’s country upbringing coming through. “I have seen God work through different styles of music,” says David, “and I can appreciate any style as long as the Lord is getting the attention.”

It was David’s pleasure to have Keith Thibodeaux in the studio again, on Drums for 2 of the songs on this project. Also appearing on the album are David’s son, Lance Huff on Drums and his brother, Clayborn Huff on Bass, both previous members of the Giants band. The recording was done at David’s studio in Forest, Mississippi. The only outside facility used was done in Nashville to record strings with some of the top names in the business, including John Catchings – Cello, David Davidson – Violin, Pamela Sixfin – Violin, and Jim Frosjean – Viola, arranged by Don Hart.

All of the songs but one were either written or co-written by David. Each has its own special story; each has a ministry unto itself. As David observes, “Everything has a season, including a song.” This is the season for David W. Huff. Really.

Greatly anticipated follow up project to "Really". Includes a Variety of Inspo, AC, Rock and Praise songs. It also features a song with a straight forward look at the issue of abortion in this country.

"The Lord called us to be evangelists through our ministry of music, and that is what we still are today. We love to see people give their hearts to the Lord and to be born again of water and the Spirit. This is the greatest thrill in our lives because this is what makes the Lord happy." -- David Huff, from the book entitled, "Four Giant Steps" 1988
